Three gentlemen flew to Washington D.C. from Curtiss Field to lobby for a National Guard flying unit in Minnesota on Sept. 26, 1920. As a result of their efforts, on Jan. 17, 1921, the federal government made the 109th Observation Squadron, now the 109th Airlift Squadron, located at the 133rd Airlift Wing, the first federally recognized National Guard flying unit.
